Almost every activity we perform in the bathroom every day requires the use of water. Here are some tips on how to protect your bathroom Walls, floors, furniture and accessories from the harmful effects of moisture.

Seal Under The Tiles

Fortunately, there are many materials and solutions available on the market that help effectively protect floors and walls from moisture. Tanking System is a waterproof membrane system designed to protect tiled areas in wet rooms, showers, bathrooms, and kitchen areas. A tanking system will inhibit the passage of moisture from within the tiled area into the substrates such as plaster, tile backer boards, timber, suspended floors, concrete floors and plywood overlays, which are used before laying the tiles. Properly used, it will effectively prevent the penetration of water into the walls.

 Seal your Bathing Area

Use a flexible rubber seal that will set a permanent waterproof seal between the item being installed and the installation environment.  Since the rubber is flexible, it will maintain a watertight seal whilst allowing for a certain amount of movement that is inevitable, particularly with new builds.

Bathroom Ventilation

Although one broken pipe can cause dramatic damage, the practically unnoticed water vapour deposited on the walls and bathroom furnishing every day can also be destructive. The best protection against it is sufficient ventilation. Due to inefficient gravitational ventilation in buildings, dampness occurs, not only in bathrooms but even in entire apartments and houses! A simple and relatively effective way to improve the efficiency of ventilation is to install forced ventilation – that is, suitable electric extractor fans.

The extractor fan allows drier, fresh air to circulate through the room. Extractor fans can also be used in kitchens and utility rooms to extract pollutants and moisture. They are must-haves in many bathrooms and wet rooms because these are the rooms that tend to create the most moisture in the average home.

N.B. All electrical work must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Preparing your Home for Heating and Plumbing this Spring

As the days get longer during spring, homeowners should be thinking about how to get the most out of their Heating & Plumbing over the next few months. With rising energy costs impacting everyone across Ireland, deploying a few essential tips to save money could make all the difference to household gas and electricity bills. So, how should you prepare your home for the new season and be ready for next Winter?

Give your Heating System some care and attention

Your heating system has worked hard over the winter months, and, as the days and nights get a little warmer, it’s worth giving it the once-over to make sure it hasn’t struggled or suffered because of the demand.

This includes:

Radiator Checks

Test your radiators to see if they need bleeding and make sure that they are free of sludge, If any of your radiators take ages to heat up or have cold spots at the bottom, the system could need cleaning. Radiators need to be switched off to be bled, so warmer months when you don’t need them to be on all the time is a great time to do this.

Turn Down the Heat

Turning down your heating system to reflect the fact that it is getting warmer.

When it comes to saving energy, it’s a good idea to have as many controls as possible. turning down your boiler thermostat by just 1ºC can save on your annual heating bills.

Boiler Service

Check when your boiler last had a service, If it’s due, book an appointment for a system check-up. Make sure a registered engineer does this service to keep your family safe, this should be done annually.

Leaking or Dripping Water

Check your plumbing –  taps, showerheads, toilets, and pipes for any drips or leaks.

It is not uncommon for things to break down over the winter months, Determine whether your plumbing and heating system is working as expected, and if not, get it fixed before it becomes a bigger problem, Pipes can burst in cold temperatures and excessive demand can strain heating system so it is best to keep a close eye all is in working order and save money in the long run.

Even the Little Things Help

Try getting rid of any radiator covers, removing any blockages, and installing some draft excluders around cold doors, If you have old windows, fix the seals with a draught excluder to help cover the gaps.

Also, while your Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) should automatically shut off at a set temperature, it’s worth checking that they are all set to the desired position. You could also introduce zone control systems, with rooms that are frequently used set to a higher temperature and unused rooms kept to a minimum heat or turned off.

Upgrading the Heating and Plumbing

As it isn’t as cold outside, Spring is a great time to test and improve your heating and plumbing.

This could be by installing new TRVS, smart meters, going for a full heating upgrade or investing in some new taps and showers. Whatever improvements you decide to make, spring is the perfect time to give your bathroom a refresh and say goodbye to winter with a stylish, fresh new look!

Last but not least take advantage of what the Government offers in 2023 and be Winter ready.

The Government is acutely aware of the effect that high energy prices and the cost of living are having on families, businesses and the most vulnerable. In recognition of these ongoing challenges, the Government agreed in February 2023 a new €1.2 billion package of measures to help with the increased cost of living.

This builds on supports introduced in 2023 to lessen the financial impact on families, households and businesses.

Supports available to help those most affected by rising energy costs include:

€600 Electricity Credit available to all Irish households, the final payment of which will be made in March 2023

The Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme will be extended, to 31 May 2023, and enhanced, including by reducing the threshold for qualification from a 50% increase in electricity or gas costs to 30% increase (to apply retrospectively from 1 September last year), and by increasing from 1 March the level of relief from 40% to 50% of eligible costs, subject to a monthly limit which will also be increased from March to €15,000 per month per trade or profession, subject to an overall cap of €45,000 where the business is carried on from more than one location. These changes are subject to state aid approval from the European Commission.

A new grant for businesses using LPG or kerosene

€700 – €8000 grants available for attic and cavity wall insulation depending on the upgrades selected

37,000 home energy upgrades including 6,000 free upgrades under the SEAI Energy Poverty Scheme

€64 estimated savings through the extension of VAT reduction on energy bills, which has now been extended to 31 October 2023.

€89 estimated savings from the PSO Levy Reduction

The information above is correct at the date of publishing.

There is a range of organisations ready to help you stay warm and well.

PRETTY PINK BATHROOM TREND 2023

Whether you choose a soft and serene pink tile or a splash of pink through fittings, you can still achieve this calming hue in your bathroom. So how can we achieve these looks? How can you get your bathroom trendy but calm and welcoming? We can do this by upgrading your sanitaryware to include black fixtures i.e. black taps, black Towel warmers or Radiators, and even Black Shower enclosures!! Changing these elements within your bathroom can elevate your look, including the soft pinks is key to balancing the black colour in your bathroom.

Pink soft tones have a calming element to them; They don’t overload the room. Contrasting the crisp white elements such as your basin and toilet creates a statement within your bathroom. They encourage wellness, which can be calming. When choosing a bathroom colour scheme, to create a mindfulness space consider beige, pink, or even blue. Psychologically it gives a sense of calm. By incorporating the marble effect you can create a unique bathroom design that emanates elegance. Contrasting a pink unit such as the Alto unit with a grey tile like our Innova, Harmony or grey blanket collections, you can really achieve a calming bathroom space.

The Designers said,

“Our brief was to challenge and improve that everyday experience, to introduce better light and offer versatility – Loop was the result.

“The form and styling of the mirror is something we are particularly proud of. Taking cues from consumer trends, Loop’s round styling was an easy choice. This, combined with its slim depth and framed lighting, gives the design a floating effect. We’re firm of the belief that useful technology doesn’t need to look bare and functional, and I think Loop reflects that.”

The bath vs shower debate has been a hotly-argued topic in households across the country. While some people love the idea of starting or ending the day with a long soak, others can’t fathom the concept of sloshing around in a tub full of water.

Both showers and baths have some pretty brilliant health and well-being benefits, but which is better for you in the long term?

As they say, Showers are better as they don’t strip your skin of natural oils, but baths are great for people with aching muscles, skin issues, or for stress relief and sleep aid, as you can soak in a bath with different Bath salts and bath oils or Milk. Always moisturise well afterwards as a long soak can dehydrate your skin.

So in saying all that I think it is a matter of personal choice and lifestyle once you take care of your skin in the long run. I like a shower but I also like a nice soak in a bath.  In today’s world, life is too busy and a bath is a luxury more than a necessity, so why not opt for both if you have room in your home as most houses these days have more than one bathroom.

As we are not medical experts we will leave the debate to those who are and I will tell you what is on the market today in the world of bathing.

EKO N1 BATH IMAGE

We all love the idea of a big luxurious freestanding bath in our bathroom but that is not always practical and a lot of people simply don’t have the space, but having a bath and a shower in your home is sometimes a necessity for some families as they have young children to bathe.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Here are some bathroom products to consider for a Family Home.

The Showerbath is a great option for busy families with young children. The Showerbath is a bath usually p-shaped or L-shaped, so basically it’s available in a squared or rounded option, your choice depends on your preference of the bathroom style you have chosen. This bath has a wider space at the shower end and comes with a hinged glass bath screen, which means it can be opened out of the way while you are bathing your child.

Another option to consider is a basic Inset Bath (also known as a standard bath) you can then add a bath panel or it can be also tiled into the bathroom, you can also buy a separate bath screen, but this bath is the same width the whole length, it doesn’t have a wider end for showering like the shower bath.

Once you have chosen which bath option you want you can then have a shower fitted over the bath, this can be a thermostatic shower or an Electric shower this all depends on the plumbing of your home as you may need a pump.  There is an option of a bath-shower mixer, Which is the tap fitted on the bath, it is only for rinsing yourself after a bath and is not as good as a shower, but there is a bath-shower mixer on the market to suit this need, like a thermostatic bath-shower mixer.

The last option for a family home is to have a shower cubicle in the en-suite and a nice luxury bath in the main bathroom. I know some people might think they don’t have the space, well we have free-standing baths as small as 1550mm with tap ledges so this is shorter than the average bath size in a home of 1700mm.

Regardless of the space you have there are plenty of styles that are sure to make your bathroom a truly wonderful place to unwind.

SHOWER BATH

A LIFE OF LUXURY

If you have plenty of space in your home for a luxury bathroom well you are in for a treat, in today’s bathing world the choice is endless.

Both Luxurious Modern Freestanding baths and captive Traditional Freestanding baths a very popular in today’s bathroom trends but people also want the option to have a luxury walk-in shower and in this create a complete wetroom,  this can be achieved whether you want a Modern or Traditional style bathroom and radiate class and sophistication into your home.

If taking a long and steamy shower is your preference then adding a walk-in shower or wetroom is a great starting point. Walk-in showers are so on-trend, that more and more people are choosing them as they are very accessible and come in a variety of styles and colours.  Walk-in showers add a sense of retreat to your bathroom, you could even go as far as having a built-in spa seat.

Turning your bathroom into a complete wetroom is another option in which you would need plenty of space if you wish to have bathroom furniture fitted in the room, if you opt for all sanitary ware then you have no worries about things getting wet, just ensure your storage cabinets are stainless stee

AYO Modular AYO 10mm Wetroom Panel with Angled Stabilising Bars Configuration 6 in Matte Black

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WET ROOM AND A WALK-IN SHOWER?

The difference between a wet room and a walk-in shower is that as in the name wet room, the space is completely open plan, although a wetroom shower screen can be used depending on the wall usage in your room, for instants you could have an alcove (this can be built by put up a partition) in the room for the shower area. In a wet room, the water flows away through a drain in the floor so you have to have the floor tiled with a slope for the water to flow correctly, whereas a walk-in shower typically features one or two glass screens and a low-level shower tray or a mosaic floor. Both options provide easy access.

Whichever you choose a walk-in shower or wet room provides stylish and practical showering for all ages, from young to elderly, as well as for those with restricted mobility.

Make sure to use a water seal when fitting a wet area in your bathroom by using a tanking system.

Now for the Luxury, if you have a lovely big open space for your bathroom, you can opt for both a bath and a shower cubicle in the same room and you could have your brassware (shower and taps) all connected, as we have multiple options for you to create your sanctuary.  In today’s market, you can opt for whichever style you want you don’t have to stick to modern to have these features.

How about a showering system with triple-function shower sets that combine a fixed shower head, shower handset and bath filler for a luxurious and varied showering experience, all controlled from one valve.  Most of the showers now come with matching taps in a range of chrome, Black, Gold and Brush Brass.

I love the Classic showers with rain heads, so on trend, and there are even showers that you can connect to your phone and tell it to turn on, sure what more do you want.

If you opt for luxury with a free-standing bath and Shower enclosure in the same room, you can choose from a wall-mounted or freestanding bath filler or a bath shower mixer, we even have wall mount basin mixers, all to mix and match to your shower and for you to create your Style, your Bathroom.

And last of all don’t forget your Bathroom accessories which are also available to match the rest of the Brassware in your bathroom.

If you need any assistance I recommend you visit our 101 Bathrooms Showroom, showcasing all your bathroom ware and tiles, it’s A World of Inspiration.

Enjoy whatever Bathroom Style you choose…
